When the snow melts in the Northern Hemisphere, the adventure doesn't have to end. For dedicated skiers and snowboarders, the Southern Hemisphere offers a prime opportunity to keep the season alive. According to reporting by Craig Altschul on OnTheSnow, the ski season in South America generally spans from June through October, providing a distinct window for those looking to swap summer heat for fresh powder.
Chilean Ski Destinations
Valle Nevado stands out as one of the premier destinations in the Southern Hemisphere. Boasting 2,200 acres of terrain and Chile’s only gondola, it caters to a broad range of abilities. Its high altitude of 9,924 feet helps preserve snow quality, while its proximity to Santiago—just 90 minutes away—makes it highly accessible. The resort is also notable for its interconnectivity with neighboring La Parva and El Colorado, expanding the total skiable area significantly.
Ski Portillo serves as the continent’s oldest resort and is frequently praised for its massive snowstorms. With 1,200 acres of terrain, it is a favorite for those seeking steep chutes and bowls. The iconic yellow and blue Hotel Portillo offers a classic ski-in/ski-out experience, though capacity is limited to 123 rooms, necessitating early bookings.
