When preparing for a ski trip, most focus is directed toward skis, boots, and outerwear. However, the PlanetSKI team, consisting of a diverse group of instructors and experienced skiers, recently took a closer look at the "odds and ends" of gear during their expedition to the Canadian Rockies. These items, often overlooked, proved to be essential additions to their mountain kits.
Stabil Midcleat: Navigating Icy Paths
Tashie, one of the PlanetSKI testers, evaluated the Stabil Midcleat for managing treacherous, icy walkways common in Canadian ski villages. Designed as a one-size-fits-most solution, the cleats stretch over standard footwear. The standout feature is the ability to rotate the four steel cleats under the arch when on ice, and back to the top of the boot when walking indoors. James reported that this tool was invaluable during a winter trek through Johnston Canyon, offering reliable traction on slippery surfaces.

Zero Tube Monocular: Terrain and Wildlife Scouting
Marie utilized the Zero Tube monocular to gain a better perspective on mountain terrain. Rather than using it for standard sightseeing, she used it to inspect the conditions of challenging areas like 'Delirium Dive' at Sunshine Village. By scouting for ice or rock hazards before committing to a run, she was able to make more informed decisions. While the monocular can be used for wildlife spotting, the team noted that using it for photography is not as seamless as advertised.

RECCO Arcade Belt: Discreet Safety
The RECCO Arcade belt combines a durable, stretchy design with integrated rescue technology. Because it incorporates a RECCO reflector, it makes the wearer searchable by rescue teams using standard handheld or helicopter-mounted detectors. Since the system works without batteries or bulk, it serves as a reliable passive safety measure for off-piste skiing, particularly for those wearing jackets that lack built-in reflectors.

Cardo Packtalk Outdoor: Hands-Free Communication
While not tested on-site in Canada, the Cardo Packtalk Outdoor system was highlighted for its utility in regions with poor cellular coverage. The system allows hands-free communication between up to 15 users without relying on mobile networks or internet data. According to the original report, this is a highly effective tool for groups looking to maintain contact while navigating large resorts or remote areas.
